For 20 years, Toph Beck worked as a NASA documentary filmmaker and composer in Los Angeles before moving back to his hometown of Omaha in 2015. Currently living in the Old Market area, Toph now focuses primarily on his art: a combination of painting, drawing, music and film.
Most of his artistic style is influenced by his experiences living in a rough neighborhood in East Hollywood. Every wall in the area was littered with advertising and dozens of repeating movie posters overwritten with layers of colorful graffiti. Every person wanted to be heard, seen, watched and adored. Every step taken felt more and more like a character moving through a video game, having either the objective of advancement – or just plain survival. These experiences are all inspiration for “Pick Best Move.”
Beck’s debut solo show, “Pick Best Move” is designed as an immersive experience. Paintings and drawings will complement the gallery itself as an interactive game board, with a multi-screen projection installation on the lower level and an original soundscape played throughout the gallery.
The exhibit draws connections between consumerism, casinos, and conspiracies. A repetitious mixture of abstract design, nonsensical graffiti, and satirical word play – all revolving around a faceless character – unknowingly being manipulated in both thought and action.
